Planning to work in Abu Dhabi as an Ayurveda practitioner, homeopath, acupuncturist, Hijama therapist or complementary medicine professional? Start by checking the licensing route for your exact title.
The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH) regulates healthcare practice in the emirate. Many applicants still search for a HAAD license, using the authority’s former name. Applications now follow DOH requirements and the relevant services on TAMM, Abu Dhabi’s government services platform.
For TCAM applicants, the assessment route deserves particular attention. Some titles have a DOH examination, while DOH’s published licensing manual requests a valid MOHAP evaluation for titles without a DOH exam. Completing a general Pearson VUE booking is not the starting point for every practitioner or therapist.
This guide explains eligibility, documents, verification, assessment, facility licensing and examination preparation.
DOH, HAAD, TCAM and TCIM: Understanding the Terms
HAAD is the older name commonly used when discussing Abu Dhabi licensing. DOH is the current Department of Health.
TCAM commonly means Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Current qualification and scope documents also use TCIM: Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicine.
The category includes different professions and scopes. An Ayurveda Practitioner, Ayurveda Massage Therapist and Hijama Therapist do not have interchangeable licenses.
A course certificate, verification report, evaluation letter and active professional license are separate records. Check which stage you have completed before telling an employer that you are licensed.
Which Practitioners and Therapists Are Covered?
The Unified PQR’s TCIM framework includes:
- Acupuncture Practitioner
- Ayurveda Practitioner
- Ayurveda Massage Therapist
- Chiropractor Practitioner
- Herbal / Oriental Medicine Practitioner
- Homeopathy Practitioner
- Naturopathy Practitioner
- Osteopathy Practitioner
- Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner
- Chinese Massage Therapist
- Unani Practitioner
- Hijama Therapist
- Traditional Japanese Medicine Practitioner
- Traditional Korean Medicine Practitioner
Use the exact title DOH accepts for your qualification and work setting. A title in the PQR does not mean an applicant can select any assessment route or ignore additional licensing conditions.
General Eligibility for a DOH TCAM License
Your application should establish:
- A recognized qualification relevant to the requested title.
- The required programme duration and theory/clinical hours.
- Internship or supervised training, where specified.
- Relevant experience supported by registration during the practice period.
- Professional good standing.
- Valid Basic Life Support certification.
- Compliance with recency-of-practice and other PQR requirements.
DOH also publishes a TCIM scope-of-practice document, effective November 2024. Eligibility for a title is only one part of the picture: the services provided must remain within the professional’s approved scope, competence and facility privileges.
Before paying, check your qualification title, graduation and internship dates, council registration dates and last working date. These records need to tell one consistent professional story.
Qualification and Experience Requirements by Profession
The following table summarizes common routes in the current Unified PQR. It is not a substitute for the complete qualification row, footnotes or DOH’s assessment of equivalence.
| Professional title | Main qualification route | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Acupuncture Practitioner | Five-year full-time acupuncture degree including internship; or an accredited minimum two-year/part-time equivalent route with 2,500 teaching hours or the specified NCCAOM/equivalent certification route | 2 years for the degree route; 3 years for the shorter route |
| Ayurveda Practitioner | BAMS/equivalent, minimum five years including internship, with 4,500 theory/practical hours and 1,000 internship hours; or a recognized 3–4-year programme with 2,500 hours plus 500 supervised internship hours | 2 years for the degree route; 4 years for the shorter route |
| Ayurveda Massage Therapist | At least 500 classroom hours or a one-year Ayurveda massage course | 2 years; supervised practice required |
| Chiropractor Practitioner | Recognized chiropractic qualification, minimum four years full-time and 4,200 contact hours | 2 years |
| Herbal / Oriental Medicine Practitioner | Relevant professional bachelor’s degree, minimum four years including internship | 2 years |
| Homeopathy Practitioner | BHMS/licentiate, minimum five years including internship; or accredited minimum three-year homeopathy programme | 2 years for the longer route; 4 years for the three-year route |
| Naturopathy Practitioner | ND/BNYS/BSc/equivalent, minimum four years including supervised clinical training | 2 years |
| Osteopathy Practitioner | Recognized osteopathy qualification, minimum four years and 1,000 supervised clinical training hours | 2 years |
| Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner | Recognized five-year qualification including a one-year internship; or a 3–4-year programme with 2,400 total hours, including 900 clinical practicum hours | 2 years for the degree route; 4 years for the shorter route |
| Chinese Massage Therapist | Relevant three-year TCM college/vocational route plus one-year supervised internship; or a 500-hour Chinese massage course plus one-year supervised internship | 2 years; supervised practice required |
| Unani Practitioner | BUMS/BEMS or the specified equivalent four-year qualification including supervised clinical practicum | 2 years |
| Hijama Therapist | Specific qualification/training routes and existing-license conditions; see the dedicated section below | 2 years |
| Traditional Japanese Medicine Practitioner | Physician route with accredited fellowship training and the relevant national examination | 2 years |
| Traditional Korean Medicine Practitioner | Accredited four-year training, comprising one year general practice and three years specialization, after passing the national examination | 2 years |
Experience means the relevant post-qualification practice specified for the route. Internship hours and experience are not automatically interchangeable.
Some UAE-national, children-of-Emirati-women and UAE-graduate provisions differ from the ordinary overseas route. Do not assume an exemption applies without supporting evidence and DOH acceptance.
Existing Physicians Seeking an Additional TCIM Scope
The PQR includes physician privilege routes with specific further training. For example, acupuncture, Ayurveda, homeopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, osteopathy, TCM and Unani each have their own additional education conditions.
An MBBS qualification and physician license alone do not authorize another discipline. The current PQR also lists experience for these additional routes; older screenshots showing “no experience required” for certain physician pathways should be checked against the current document.
Ayurveda Massage Therapist License in Abu Dhabi
Ayurveda Massage Therapist is a separate healthcare title. The PQR requires at least 500 hours of classes or a one-year Ayurveda massage course, plus two years of related post-qualification experience.
The therapist must practise under the supervision of an Ayurveda Practitioner. A therapist license does not grant independent Ayurveda practitioner status.
Before accepting employment, establish who will provide supervision and whether the facility has the appropriate service. Prepare the certificate, curriculum and training-hour evidence for credentialing.
Chinese Massage Therapists similarly require supervision under a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner. A generic spa-massage certificate should not be assumed equivalent to either healthcare title.
DOH Hijama Therapist Requirements
The current PQR lists Hijama qualification/training routes based on:
- High-school education plus an accredited two-year Hijama programme.
- A healthcare bachelor’s qualification plus a one-year Hijama programme.
- An eligible current UAE healthcare license and minimum BSc qualification, together with an Authority-approved programme of at least 25 CME hours.
The routes include 20 treatment cases, and the table states two years of related post-qualification experience.
The footnotes require practice in a healthcare facility and specify that the Hijama title is added to an existing Authority license, except for the stated UAE-national/children-of-Emirati-women provisions.
These conditions must be read together. Completing a short Hijama course, even one longer than the minimum hours, does not by itself establish licensing eligibility. Retain the curriculum, course approval, training hours and documented cases.
Dry cupping under TCM and Hijama under Unani have specific scope provisions. They should not be described as general permission for every TCIM therapist to perform wet cupping.
Documents Required for DOH TCAM Licensing

| Qualification certificates | Include relevant primary and additional training |
| Complete transcript/mark sheets | Show course duration, theory and clinical hours |
| Internship or clinical-training evidence | Support the qualification route |
| Registration/practising licenses | Cover the period of employment claimed |
| Experience certificates | State accurate dates, title and relevant practice |
| Good Standing Certificate | Obtain the appropriate regulator-issued record |
| Valid BLS certificate | Keep it current for the application |
| CV | Match the employment and education documents |

The 2024 DOH TCAM checklist specifies a Good Standing Certificate issued within six months and professional registration covering the required experience. Additional records may be requested during review.
Have approved translations ready where necessary and follow the current DOH/DataFlow instructions for originals, translations and certification.

Important DOH Assessment Difference: MOHAP Evaluation:
The 2024 DOH Licensing Procedural Manual states that a valid MOHAP evaluation for the requested title is required for TCAM titles that do not have a DOH exam.
Its TCAM examination table lists:
| Route in the published manual | What the applicant should do |
|---|---|
| Chiropractor Practitioner | Follow the DOH oral assessment route if assigned |
| Osteopathy Practitioner | Follow the DOH oral assessment route if assigned |
| TCAM title without a DOH exam in that table | Supply the valid MOHAP evaluation for the requested title where instructed |
This is a dated published route, not a promise that the examination catalogue cannot change. Confirm your current title and prerequisites in TAMM before booking or purchasing preparation materials.
A MOHAP evaluation can be supporting evidence for DOH; it is not an active Abu Dhabi license. DOH credentialing, clearance and final licensing requirements remain separate.
DOH / HAAD TCAM Application Process
Step 1: Confirm Your Title and Assessment Route
Read the PQR, check the DOH licensing manual and identify the requested title.
If the route requires a MOHAP evaluation, establish whether your existing evaluation matches the title and remains acceptable. Do not assume a different title’s evaluation can be used.
Step 2: Access TAMM
Register or sign in using the identification/UAE PASS route provided. Select the relevant DOH health-professional licensing service.
Use your own accurate contact details. If you are applying from abroad and have access difficulties, use TAMM/DOH support rather than creating duplicate accounts.
Step 3: Arrange Primary Source Verification
Follow the linked DOH DataFlow process. Submit the credentials required for your case and include earlier reports where relevant.
Save the case number and any UIN/reference associated with previous verification.
Step 4: Complete Credentialing
After verification, supply the records requested for the licensing review, including the appropriate evaluation/examination evidence.
Answer additional-document requests precisely. If DOH questions the title, qualification equivalence or experience, resolve that issue before making further paid bookings.
Step 5: Complete the Assigned Assessment
Follow the examination approval attached to the application. This may involve DOH oral assessment or the evaluation evidence required for the title.
If a DOH computer-based examination is assigned, use the approved TAMM-to-Pearson route. Passing an examination does not remove the remaining licensing requirements.
Step 6: Complete Required Clearance
The published new-license pathway includes security clearance. Follow the records and actions requested in your case.
Do not treat completion of credentialing or an exam as confirmation that every approval is finished.
Step 7: Complete Facility Licensing
Coordinate with the eligible hiring facility for the remaining application and payment steps. Make sure the professional title, facility service and required supervision arrangements agree.
Confirm that the license permits practice before starting clinical work.
DOH DataFlow for TCAM Professionals
DataFlow verifies documents with the institutions, regulators and employers that issued them. A typical preparation sequence is:
- Check which records the DOH route requires.
- Enter the qualification and employment details accurately.
- Upload complete, readable scans.
- Sign the requested authorization.
- Pay the package and any disclosed additional charges.
- Respond to missing-information requests.
- Review the report outcome and application status.
A positive report establishes verification results, not automatic approval of the professional title.
Can I Use an Existing DataFlow Report?
Include your earlier report and reference details. DOH’s FAQs describe use of previous DataFlow records and a UIN in relevant re-registration/transfer workflows.
The authority/provider may still require transfer, additional verification or updated employment records. Reusing verified documents does not automatically transfer a license between regulators.
Does DataFlow Replace Attestation?
DataFlow states that its PSV process does not itself require attestation/apostille. A regulator, employer or other authority may have separate document requirements. Check those independently.
DOH / HAAD Examinations: Pearson VUE, Oral and MOHAP Routes
Is the DOH Exam Prometric?
The official DOH computer-based examination provider is Pearson VUE. The booking route begins after DOH approval in TAMM.
Some TCAM applicants may separately undergo a MOHAP assessment because of the evaluation route for their title. That does not make the DOH Pearson examination a Prometric examination.
Do not use DHA exam codes or its TCAM question counts and pass marks for a DOH application.
DOH Pearson VUE Booking
Where a DOH computer-based examination is assigned:
- Wait for application approval for examination.
- Make the DOH pre-booking payment in TAMM.
- Use the Pearson link activated in the TAMM application.
- Select the available date, time and centre.
- Pay the applicable scheduling charge.
- Save and print the confirmation.
Pearson’s official DOH page describes this linked process. It does not mean every TCAM professional has a Pearson examination.
For attendance, Pearson requests two original valid IDs, including a passport and another government/official photographic ID, with a signature on at least one. Follow the confirmation and name-matching rules.
DOH Oral Assessment
The 2024 manual identifies an oral route for Chiropractor and Osteopathy Practitioner, with a listed duration of 40–60 minutes in its TCAM section.
Use the current appointment notice for the actual format and duration. DOH’s FAQ provides the TAMM examination-booking route; check the available oral appointment and payment instructions in your case.
The manual states that examinations are in English, without a translator. It normally describes one assessment component, with additional components for some titles when specified after credentialing.
Suggested Oral Preparation Topics
The following are study themes, not a promised official question bank:
- Assessment and clinical reasoning.
- Contraindications and recognition of urgent symptoms.
- Referral to conventional/emergency care.
- Safe treatment and infection prevention.
- Documentation, consent and patient communication.
- Limits of professional scope and privileges.
- Therapist supervision.
For example, practise explaining why a patient is unsuitable for a proposed treatment and how you would document and escalate the concern. Clear reasoning matters as much as recalling facts.
Attempts, Results and Exemptions
The published DOH manual applies a normal three-attempt limit for the same title across UAE health authorities and describes exceptions through the relevant PQR provisions. Declare prior attempts and confirm individual eligibility before booking again.
Results are provided through TAMM. Examination exemption does not automatically exempt the applicant from credentialing, verification or licensing.
The 2024 manual describes a six-month examination-step window. Follow the actual validity shown on your approval rather than assuming it remains open indefinitely.
License Validity, Renewal and Continuing Education
The 2024 DOH TCAM manual describes a two-year license. Check the dates and conditions on the actual license issued.
DOH’s current continuing-education page lists 10 hours per year for traditional/complementary/alternative medicine, including at least five Category 1 hours and no more than five Category 2 hours. Keep specialty-relevant evidence across the license cycle.
DOH’s CME FAQ states that BLS course credits do not count toward the minimum CME/CPD requirement. Maintaining BLS and completing continuing education are separate responsibilities.
Do not wait until renewal week to collect certificates or resolve gaps in the practice history.
Career Gaps and Processing Time
A career gap can change eligibility or create additional training/assessment requirements. The 2024 TCAM manual highlights the timing of the last experience; the current PQR and your DOH assessment govern the individual case.
Before requesting advice, prepare the last clinical working date, registration status and subsequent practice/training evidence.
There is no single guaranteed end-to-end timeline. Issuer responses, credentialing questions, assessment availability, clearance and facility readiness all affect completion. Avoid booking non-refundable travel or promising a start date solely because verification is finished.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Treating HAAD as a separate new licensing authority.
- Booking Pearson VUE before DOH authorizes the examination.
- Assuming every TCAM title has a DOH computer-based examination.
- Ignoring a requested MOHAP evaluation.
- Using a therapist qualification to apply as an independent practitioner.
- Assuming verification or an evaluation letter permits clinical practice.
- Copying DHA exam specifications into a DOH application.
- Overlooking therapist supervision and facility privileges.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HAAD registration different from DOH registration?
HAAD is the former authority name commonly used in searches. Follow current DOH requirements and TAMM services.
Can BAMS graduates apply as Ayurveda Practitioners?
A qualifying BAMS/equivalent is a listed PQR route. The programme, internship, registration, experience and other records must still be assessed.
Can BHMS and BUMS graduates apply?
Qualifying Homeopathy and Unani routes are listed. DOH assesses the exact credentials and directs the relevant evaluation/assessment requirements.
Do Ayurveda Massage Therapists need supervision?
Yes. The PQR requires supervision under an Ayurveda Practitioner.
Is a MOHAP evaluation required for DOH TCAM?
The 2024 DOH manual requests it for titles without a DOH exam in its TCAM table. Confirm your current title requirements in TAMM.
Which TCAM titles have a DOH oral exam?
The 2024 manual lists Chiropractor Practitioner and Osteopathy Practitioner. The live DOH decision controls the current route.
Is there one HAAD TCAM pass mark for everyone?
A universal TCAM pass mark was not verified. Follow the title-specific assessment instructions rather than third-party figures.
Can I practise with a MOHAP evaluation alone?
No. The appropriate DOH professional license and facility permissions must be in place for Abu Dhabi practice.
