Thinking about a nursing job in the Maldives? A job offer is an important step, but you also need to understand how your qualification, registration and experience will be assessed. Preparing the right documents before accepting a joining date can save you repeated requests and avoidable delays.
This guide explains the Maldives Nursing and Midwifery Council (MNMC) registration pathway for internationally educated nurses. Who regulates nurses in the Maldives?
MNMC handles nursing registration and practising licences. Its Ministry of Health webpage directs applicants to submit relevant documentation through the Virtual Counter. Use the official foreign nurse application, rather than the form for Maldivian applicants.

4. Arrange the competency examination
MNMC manages examination applications. Maldives National University (MNU) conducts the examination. The Council issues a payment slip; pay before its deadline and send payment evidence as instructed. The subsequent Exam Requisition slip confirms the date, time and venue. Use that slip to plan attendance.
5. Attend the examination
MNU instructs nursing candidates to arrive 30 minutes early with original identification, their Exam Requisition slip and a blue or black pen. A photocopy or digital passport image is not accepted as identification. Personal electronic devices and study notes must be deposited as directed. Candidates can view results after submission, with official notification expected the following day under the published instructions.
6. Complete outstanding registration requirements
After the examination, follow MNMC’s instructions for the remaining approval stages. Keep your issued registration and licence documents, and check their details and expiry dates. Confirm professional authorisation before beginning nursing duties.
How to prepare for the examination:
Use Council-issued syllabus or examination guidance as your starting point. As a practical study plan, revise assessment, nursing fundamentals, medication calculations, infection prevention, emergency responses, documentation and professional accountability. Practise explaining why an answer is safe, rather than memorising an option without understanding it.
Avoid using another country’s examination format as proof of the Maldives question count, duration, pass mark or attempt limit. Confirm these details with MNMC for your examination.
Fees and processing time:
Use the current Council and MNU payment instructions. A single advertised package may not explain which charges cover registration, the examination, certification, translation or travel. Ask for an itemised breakdown and keep receipts.
There is no guaranteed end-to-end timeline stated here. Document clarification, examination availability and employer arrangements can affect your joining plan. Avoid making non-refundable travel commitments based only on an estimated approval date.
Work permit and work e-Visa:
Maldives Immigration’s current guidance requires new expatriate workers to arrive with a valid Entry Pass (Work Permit). The employer or authorised representative must obtain the Work e-Visa within 15 days of arrival, through the Xpat system.
The approved digital e-Visa is the recognised Work Visa; old passport visa stickers ceased to be valid after 23 November 2025. Your nursing registration does not replace these immigration requirements. Ask your employer to confirm the correct entry arrangement before travelling and keep your passport information updated in the visa record.

Can I use a Gulf nursing licence instead of applying to MNMC?
Prepare your overseas registration history as supporting evidence, but confirm the Maldives approval required for your role. Do not treat a DHA, MOHAP or Saudi licence as permission to begin nursing work in the Maldives.
Should I obtain Good Standing very early?
Plan the request around your application, allowing time for the issuing council to respond. Requesting a time-limited document too early may mean having to obtain it again.
Does passing the examination mean I can immediately join?
Confirm all professional approvals and employer immigration arrangements first. Keep the examination result, Council approval and joining instructions together so you can check what remains outstanding.
What should I check in a job offer?
Ask about your actual work location, clinical department, shifts, accommodation, transport, leave, insurance and payment responsibilities. The Maldives includes island workplaces, so understand where you will live and work before accepting the contract.
