DOH Trainee Pharmacist in Abu Dhabi: TAMM Application, Documents and Approved Training Settings:

“I have just finished my pharmacy degree. Can I complete six months of training in Abu Dhabi and then apply for a DOH licence?” We hear this question often. The first step is to identify exactly what training DOH will recognise for your qualification and circumstances. A placement offer and DOH trainee approval are separate from a full Pharmacist licence.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH) regulates healthcare professional practice in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the wider emirate. Applications and professional profiles are handled through TAMM. DOH also publishes a list of Approved Practice Settings (APS). An APS listing identifies a facility authorised for specified types of training; it is not a promise that the facility has a vacant trainee place or will issue an offer.

Trainee registration or full Pharmacist licence?

DOH’s training framework recognises supervised pathways, including transition-to-practice training for newly graduated allied healthcare professionals. It distinguishes registration or approval to train from independent professional licensure. A trainee may only undertake activities permitted by the approved training programme and supervision arrangements. An observership is observation, not hands-on pharmacist experience. DOH training standards require the applicable trainee registration or licensure process to be completed before training starts.

The current UAE unified Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR) list a BSc in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy and two years of related post-qualification experience for the standard Pharmacist title. DOH’s licensing manual describes some specific exceptions, including a six-month experience or clinical-training provision for UAE university graduates and GCC nationals. These provisions should not be applied automatically to every newly qualified pharmacist. A foreign graduate should obtain a case-specific determination before assuming that six months of training will replace the ordinary two-year requirement. Pharmacy sales or pharmaceutical-company experience is not accepted as pharmacist practice experience under the PQR.

Step 1: Ask DOH which training pathway applies

Before paying for a placement, gather the degree, transcript, graduation date, any internship evidence, nationality and university details, and any previous registration or work history. If DOH has already issued an eligibility or deficiency decision, keep the exact letter. Ask the training facility or DOH whether the proposed placement is transition-to-practice training, experience-equivalency training, another supervised clinical-training programme, or an observership. The programme type matters because an observership cannot be advertised as practical pharmacist training.

The DOH Approved Practice Setting standards permit transition-to-practice training at APS-Intermediate or APS-Advanced, whereas APS-Basic is for observership and undergraduate training. Check that the specific facility branch, its pharmacy specialty and its approved training level match the proposed activity.

Step 2: Obtain an offer from an appropriate facility

Contact an APS pharmacy or hospital education team directly. Ask whether it accepts your category of graduate, has a current place, and can support the DOH trainee registration. A useful offer or nomination letter should identify the candidate, the facility’s legal name and DOH facility licence number, the TAMM professional or trainee title, the training programme type, proposed start and end dates, supervising pharmacist, and whether any fee or stipend applies. DOH defines a nomination letter as an official offer from a facility in the emirate stating the professional’s name and offered position title.

Do not start supervised pharmacy work solely on the strength of an offer letter. The facility should confirm the required DOH approval and its own onboarding requirements first.

Step 3: Prepare documents for TAMM and facility review

The public TAMM “Issue a Healthcare Professional Licence” page lists a passport, photograph and academic qualifications among its documents. DOH’s general new-registration manual additionally describes qualifications, transcript, professional registration and good standing where applicable, and a nomination or offer letter if available. That public checklist is for general professional licensing; DOH has not published a separate, complete public upload checklist for every Trainee Pharmacist scenario. The actual document prompts in the signed-in TAMM application and DOH’s instructions for the selected programme take priority.

Prepare the following for assessment, without assuming that every item is mandatory for every fresh graduate:

1. Valid passport and recent passport-size photograph.
2. Pharmacy degree or completion certificate, academic transcript and graduation date.
3. Internship or supervised-training certificate and logbook, if already completed.
4. Facility offer or nomination stating the exact training title, branch and programme.
5. Emirates ID, UAE residence visa or entry details, if available and requested.
6. Existing professional licence/registration and good-standing certificate, only if applicable to the person’s history and requested pathway.
7. Any DOH deficiency or eligibility letter specifying required training.
8. Any additional signed training agreement, supervisor details or facility documents requested in TAMM or by DOH.

If primary-source verification (DataFlow or another designated verifier) appears as a required step for the selected application, follow the live portal instructions. Do not purchase a general pharmacist verification package on the assumption that it is automatically required for trainee registration.

Step 4: Submit the correct application through TAMM

Create or access your professional profile at TAMM using UAE PASS. The DOH licensing manual explains that a resident can establish a profile using Emirates ID, while a non-resident may use mobile and email details. Confirm the route with the facility’s licensing or training coordinator. In the healthcare professional services, select the trainee/registration pathway that DOH and the facility have confirmed for your case; do not select the full Pharmacist title merely because the trainee option is difficult to find.

Enter names and dates exactly as shown on the passport and academic records. Attach the offer and the documents requested by the live application, review the proposed title and facility branch, then submit and retain the application number. The facility may need to complete linking, nomination or approval steps through its own TAMM account. Follow any DOH requests for additional evidence and wait for the registration or approval before commencing hands-on training.

The public TAMM service called “Enrolment in Medical Education Programmes” describes internship, residency and fellowship programmes. It should not be assumed to be the right form for every trainee pharmacist. The signed-in trainee route can vary with programme and applicant status; the APS and DOH should confirm the exact form and title before submission.

Approved practice settings to contact

The examples below appear in DOH’s APS list dated September 2025. They are starting points for enquiries, not confirmed openings, and approval must be checked for the intended pharmacy programme and branch. APS-Intermediate and APS-Advanced are the relevant levels to investigate for supervised transition-to-practice training.

DOH’s directory contains many more facilities, including individual Al Ain Pharmacy branches. Search the official APS PDF by “Pharmacy” and compare the facility licence number with the offer; a chain name alone is not enough. The DOH list is a snapshot, so request current written confirmation before making commitments.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

There is no single publicly verified six-month duration or universal fee for every Trainee Pharmacist application. Training length depends on the programme, DOH decision and offer. The time to find a placement, secure trainee approval and complete the training are separate periods. Ask the APS for its training calendar, supervision arrangements, assessment method and completion certificate. Ask DOH whether the completed period will meet the candidate’s specific licensing requirement.

Likewise, do not use the standard Pharmacist new-licence or exam fees as a quotation for trainee registration. The TAMM page for a full healthcare professional licence displays application and possible exam fees, but the trainee route may have different charges. Confirm any official fee on the live application before payment, and get the facility’s fee, stipend and refund terms in writing.

What happens after training?

Keep a signed training agreement, attendance records, supervisor assessments, logbook and completion certificate. When ready to apply for the full Pharmacist title, DOH will assess the qualification, acceptable experience, registration history, verification and examination requirements under the applicable PQR. Completion of a trainee programme does not automatically issue a full DOH Pharmacist licence.

Common questions

Can I apply before finding a facility? Create a TAMM profile and seek DOH advice, but a facility offer and matching APS are central to an actual supervised training placement. The facility should confirm its nomination and application responsibilities.

Can any pharmacy in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain train me? No. Verify the exact branch, its live DOH licence, APS level and pharmacy programme. A site listed only as APS-Basic should not be presented as approved for hands-on transition-to-practice training.

Does every new graduate need exactly six months? No universal six-month rule was found for all pharmacy graduates. The PQR’s standard Pharmacist experience requirement and any applicable exemptions must be assessed against the candidate’s own circumstances.

Is Trainee Pharmacist the same as a pharmacist licence? No. A trainee approval limits activities to the authorised supervised training; independent pharmacist practice requires the full licence.
