For nurses considering a move into an aesthetic clinic, laser hair reduction can offer a new career direction. Before paying for a training course, however, it is important to understand how that qualification fits into the licensing process.
Under Sharjah Health Authority (SHA), an existing professional may need an updated professional assessment followed by an amendment to the active licence. Completing a laser course alone does not authorise you to start practising.
This guide explains the eligibility requirements, documents, application steps and fees.
What Is a Laser Technician Licence Upgrade?
The recognised professional title in the Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements is Laser Hair Reduction Technician. SHA participates in this shared UAE qualification framework.
Although applicants often call the process a “nursing licence upgrade,” it concerns an additional or amended professional role. Ask SHA how the proposed laser role should be recorded in your case.
Who Can Apply?
The PQR identifies different eligibility pathways:
| Applicant’s background | Requirements |
|---|---|
| UAE-authority-licensed Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse or Beauty Therapist | Accredited laser hair reduction course and evidence of ten hands-on training cases. No additional experience is listed, subject to gap-of-practice criteria. |
| Relevant academic qualification without using the licensed-professional pathway | Accredited laser course, ten hands-on cases and one year of post-qualification experience in a related field. |
| Relevant academic qualification with overseas hair reduction certification | Certification from a listed body—SCHMR or NCLC—plus ten hands-on cases and one year of post-qualification related experience. |
SHA must determine which pathway applies to your qualifications and licence status.
Do not assume that every nurse needs one year of laser experience, or that every applicant qualifies without experience.
Choosing a Laser Training Course
Before enrolling, request written information about:
- The programme’s accreditation and certificate.
- Whether SHA accepts it for your intended application.
- How supervised practical training is organised.
- How the ten hands-on cases are documented.
- Whether practical sessions, assessment and certification are included in the price.
- The provider’s refund and cancellation terms.
A short course timetable or a claim of “international recognition” does not establish acceptance for your individual application.
SHA Laser Upgrade Application: Step by Step
Step 1: Check Your Current Professional Status
Confirm the authority regulating your intended workplace. Review your current licence, SHA assessment status and employment situation with the facility’s licensing officer.
If you do not have an SHA assessment, ask about the initial Healthcare Professional Assessment route. Existing SHA professionals should confirm the appropriate assessment-update transaction. SHA lists these as separate services. sha.shj.ae
Step 2: Complete Suitable Laser Training
Obtain the training certificate and practical case evidence.
Check that your name matches your passport and professional records. Resolve incorrect dates, incomplete certificates or missing practical records before submission.
Step 3: Apply to Update Your Assessment
SHA provides a service for requesting a secondary title, title amendment or additional privilege. It requires a valid SHA assessment.
Submit the application through the official service link, upload supporting records, declare previous UAE examination attempts when requested and pay the assigned charges. sha.shj.ae
Step 4: Complete Verification and Any Required Examination
Submit existing PSV reports and relevant examination-exemption evidence.
Do not assume that holding a nursing licence automatically exempts you from assessment for a laser title. Follow SHA’s decision before booking an examination or relying on an exemption.
Step 5: Obtain the Updated Assessment Certificate
Check the approved title and any conditions carefully.
SHA states that an assessment certificate does not authorise practice; an official professional licence is required. sha.shj.ae
Step 6: Complete the Facility’s Licence Amendment
For an existing active SHA licence, the facility representative applies to amend the licence using the updated assessment.
The service requires a facility request letter and an offer letter. Following approval, an updated electronic licence and professional card are issued. SHA states that the amendment does not change the existing licence’s validity or expiry date. sha.shj.ae
If you need your first SHA licence, your employer should confirm the appropriate new-licensing route.
Step 7: Confirm Approval Before Starting Laser Duties
Ask your facility to verify your final licence, approved title and permitted duties before assigning laser treatments.
Documents Required
Use this as a preparation checklist. The exact requirements depend on your pathway and SHA’s review.
| Document | When required |
|---|---|
| Valid passport copy | Professional assessment |
| Valid Emirates ID copy | SHA application records |
| Nursing qualification certificate | Academic eligibility |
| Academic transcript or marksheets | If required |
| Current or recent professional licence | Professional status |
| Recent experience certificate | Relevant employment history |
| Good Standing Certificate | From the current licensing authority, as applicable |
| Previous PSV/DataFlow reports | If available |
| Examination-exemption evidence | If relevant |
| Accredited laser training certificate | Laser qualification pathway |
| Evidence of ten hands-on training cases | Practical training requirement |
| Existing valid SHA assessment | Assessment-update route |
| Legal Arabic or English translations | For documents in other languages |
| Facility request letter and offer letter | Licence-amendment stage |
The checklist combines SHA’s professional assessment documents with the PQR’s laser training requirements and the facility amendment documents. sha.shj.ae
Keep a recent photograph and BLS/CPR certificate ready if requested; SHA’s general FAQ includes these among evaluation records. sha.shj.ae

SHA Laser Technician Upgrade Fees
| Component | Published fee or costing basis |
|---|---|
| Initial nursing/allied health assessment, if applicable | AED 300 |
| Secondary-title/title-amendment/privilege assessment service | AED 300 |
| Active professional licence amendment: nursing/allied health | AED 100 |
| Laser training | Provider’s quotation |
| Additional PSV/DataFlow | Assigned verification charges |
| Examination or reattempt, if required | Official assigned charges |
| Translation | Actual charges |
| New licence, if applicable | Separate licensing fee |
The professional assessment and title-update services publish AED 300 fees for nursing/allied health categories; the corresponding licence amendment is AED 100. sha.shj.ae
For an eligible existing SHA licensee using the assessment-update and licence-amendment route, those two service fees total AED 400.
This is not an all-inclusive package price. Training, verification, examination and other applicable costs are additional. Do not automatically add an initial assessment fee to every upgrade; confirm which transactions your case requires.
How Long Does It Take?
SHA lists eight working days for each individual service: initial assessment, assessment update and licence amendment. These are separate service durations, not a promise that the entire process will finish within eight days. sha.shj.ae
Training schedules, verification, examinations and document corrections can extend the overall timeline.
What If You Have a Practice Gap?
SHA’s published guidance is inconsistent. The title-update service conditions refer to a two-year practice-gap limit, while its FAQ discusses amendments where the gap is below three years. The initial assessment page also refers to three years.
If you have a practice gap, obtain written clarification about eligibility and any additional requirements before paying. sha.shj.ae
Can You Keep Your Nursing Title?
SHA offers a secondary-title application service, but its availability does not guarantee approval for every nurse’s proposed combination of roles. sha.shj.ae
Ask whether your laser role will be recorded as a secondary title, a title amendment or another authorisation. Avoid cancelling your nursing licence without instructions specific to your case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a laser training certificate enough to start working?
No. Complete the applicable assessment and professional licensing process before beginning laser duties.
Is examination exemption automatic?
Do not assume an exemption when changing from nursing to laser work. Submit relevant evidence and await SHA’s decision.
Does a laser hair reduction title cover all aesthetic procedures?
Do not treat this title as permission for injectables, tattoo removal, resurfacing or other cosmetic treatments. Confirm the permitted scope and any separate approvals.
Can a trainee licence be amended?
SHA states that a trainee licence cannot be amended directly. Obtain instructions on the required cancellation and subsequent application before acting. sha.shj.ae
