Are you an Indian MBBS graduate planning to work as a doctor in Australia? You may already have completed your internship and gained experience as a general practitioner, but the Australian registration process involves several separate stages: qualification verification, assessment, registration and supervised practice.
For an Indian MBBS doctor who does not qualify for another recognised pathway, the Australian Medical Council Standard Pathway is generally the route towards general registration. Two years of GP experience can support your professional profile, but it does not automatically exempt you from AMC examinations or qualify you for Australian specialist GP registration.
This guide explains the pathway, the documents to prepare and the costs to consider before you begin.
What Is the AMC, and Who Grants Your Medical Registration?
The Australian Medical Council assesses international medical graduates through the relevant assessment process. However, the AMC does not itself issue your permission to practise medicine.
| Organisation | Main responsibility |
|---|---|
| Australian Medical Council—AMC | Qualification eligibility, assessment and the AMC certificate |
| ECFMG/Intealth through EPIC | Primary-source verification of medical credentials |
| Medical Board of Australia and Ahpra | Assessment and approval of medical registration |
| Australian immigration authorities | Visa and work-rights decisions |
An AMC examination pass, an AMC certificate, medical registration and a work visa are different milestones. Plan for each separately.
Which Pathway Applies to an Indian MBBS Graduate?
Standard Pathway
The Standard Pathway is intended for international medical graduates who are not eligible for the Competent Authority or specialist pathways. It requires passing the AMC CAT MCQ examination and either the AMC Clinical Examination or an AMC-accredited workplace-based assessment program.
Competent Authority Pathway
Some doctors qualify through specified overseas assessment and practice combinations recognised by the Medical Board. Eligibility depends on meeting an approved category, including its assessment and experience requirements. Holding an Indian MBBS or simply passing an overseas examination does not automatically establish eligibility.
Specialist Pathways
Doctors with relevant overseas specialist qualifications may be eligible for a specialist assessment pathway. Working under the title “GP” after MBBS in India does not, by itself, establish specialist recognition in Australian general practice. Check the requirements for your actual postgraduate qualification and training.
For an applicant whose qualifications are Indian MBBS, completed internship and two years of GP experience, the Standard Pathway is usually the starting point, unless additional qualifications or overseas practice change eligibility.
Eligibility Requirements
1. An eligible medical school, degree and graduation year
Check all three using the AMC eligibility guidance. Do not assume that every degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools is automatically eligible for your particular graduation year. Follow the AMC instructions concerning the school listing, degree title and relevant sponsor information.
2. Primary-source verification
Your medical qualification must undergo the required verification process. Verification means confirming authenticity directly with the issuing institution; uploading a scan is only part of the process. The AMC explains how verification outcomes are made available for registration and assessment purposes.
3. Internship or comparable training
Prepare evidence of your completed Indian compulsory rotating internship. The Medical Board strongly advises applicants to complete internship or comparable training in their country of graduation before applying for Australian registration, because Australian graduates receive priority for accredited Australian internship places. Overseas internship evidence remains subject to assessment.
4. Registration standards
At the appropriate registration stage, you must satisfy applicable standards for English language skills, recency of practice, criminal history, professional indemnity insurance and continuing professional development. Keep your medical registration and employment records organised, and explain any practice gaps accurately.
Can a Doctor With Two Years of GP Experience Apply?
Two years of GP experience does not prevent you from starting the AMC assessment process, provided your qualification is eligible and you meet the assessment requirements.
However, the experience requirement for a particular job or registration category can be different. Applicants seeking limited registration for area of need to work in general practice must have at least three years of full-time-equivalent general practice or primary-care experience.
This is not a universal three-year requirement for opening an AMC portfolio or sitting the AMC MCQ examination. It is a requirement attached to that specific registration route.
If you currently have two years of post-internship GP experience, check your eligibility before paying for a GP-position assessment. Exploring appropriate supervised hospital positions is another option, subject to employer selection and Board approval. Do not assume that internship rotations will automatically count towards the GP experience requirement.
English Language Requirements
Many India-educated applicants need to meet the English test pathway. An English-medium MBBS alone should not be treated as proof that an exemption applies.
For IELTS Academic, the current published Ahpra minimum scores are: [10]
| Component | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Overall | 7.0 |
| Listening | 7.0 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Speaking | 7.0 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
Other approved English tests are available. Check Ahpra’s current accepted-test table for your test date, component scores, approved delivery format, result currency and any rules for combining sittings. English evidence for registration should be planned alongside exam preparation, even where it is not required at the initial AMC assessment stage.
Documents Required: A Practical Checklist
Documents are requested at different stages. This is a preparation checklist, not a direction to upload every document to every organisation.
| Category | Records to prepare |
|---|---|
| Identity | Valid passport, photograph, required identity checks and name-change evidence where applicable |
| Medical education | Final MBBS degree; transcripts, marksheets or other educational records if requested |
| Internship | Completion certificate and rotation details showing departments, dates and duration |
| Professional registration | Current and previous relevant medical council registration certificates |
| Employment | Experience certificates stating role, exact dates, hours and scope of work; supporting records if requested |
| Career history | Detailed CV with training, employment and explanations of gaps |
| English | Accepted evidence meeting the applicable registration standard |
| Standing and history | Certificates of good standing/registration status and required criminal-history checks |
| Australian position | Written offer, position description, employer details, proposed supervisors and supervision plan |
| Assessment | Relevant AMC results/certificate and PESCI outcome where required |
Ahpra generally requires good-standing/registration-status evidence from each overseas registration authority where you were registered during the preceding 10 years. Follow its direct-submission instructions. Use certified copies and compliant translations where the receiving authority requires them.

Step-by-Step AMC Standard Pathway
Step 1: Confirm your assessment pathway and qualification eligibility
Check your medical school, degree title and graduation year before paying assessment fees. Review whether any additional overseas qualification or practice makes another pathway relevant.
Step 2: Establish your AMC portfolio and arrange verification
Follow the AMC account instructions and establish the required portfolio. Arrange MyIntealth/EPIC identity confirmation and credential verification according to the current AMC instructions. Make sure the AMC receives the required verification information. These are separate systems and may involve separate fees.
Check that your university knows how to respond to the verification request. Name inconsistencies, incomplete records and delayed institutional responses can slow progress.
Step 3: Pass the AMC CAT MCQ examination
The AMC MCQ is a computer-based assessment consisting of 150 questions in a 3.5-hour session, with one correct response from five options. It tests broad clinical knowledge and decision-making across major medical disciplines.
Preparation should include Australian clinical practice, safe management, communication, ethics and appropriate investigation and referral—not only memorising facts.
Step 4: Complete the clinical examination or WBA
| Assessment option | How it works |
|---|---|
| AMC Clinical Examination | A clinical assessment available after passing AMC MCQ; follow the current examination specifications and booking rules |
| Workplace-based assessment—WBA | Assessment during employment in an approved clinical position through an AMC-accredited provider |
The clinical examination currently comprises 16 assessed stations and four rest stations. WBA generally takes 6–12 months and requires an MCQ pass, suitable employment, registration and admission to an accredited program. An MCQ pass does not guarantee a WBA place.
Step 5: Secure an appropriate position and registration
The order can vary. Some applicants obtain suitable supervised employment under limited registration after AMC MCQ and complete their remaining assessment while working. Others complete the clinical examination, obtain the AMC certificate and apply for provisional registration for an approved position.
Neither route is automatic. The Board must approve the relevant registration application and supervision arrangements; the employer must offer a suitable job.
Step 6: Complete approved Australian supervised practice
For general registration as an AMC certificate holder, the Board requires evidence of 12 months—at least 47 weeks full-time equivalent—of satisfactory approved supervised practice in Australia, together with the applicable requirements and reports.
Check the clinical experience and reporting requirements for your proposed position in advance. WBA and supervised practice can overlap where approved; they should not automatically be counted as two separate additional years. Similarly, do not assume that every period of Australian employment will count.
Step 7: Apply for general registration
Once you have the AMC certificate, satisfactory approved practice evidence and meet the other applicable standards, apply through Ahpra. The Medical Board makes the registration decision.
AMC Fees and Verification Costs
The following AMC fees were checked on 21 October 2026. Fees may change.
| AMC item | Fee in AUD |
|---|---|
| Initial portfolio, including one qualification | 642 |
| CAT MCQ examination | 2,920 |
| Clinical examination—in person | 3,000 |
| Clinical examination—online | 3,400 |
| AMC workplace-based assessment fee | 1,070 |
AMC assessment subtotals
| Route | AMC subtotal |
|---|---|
| Portfolio + MCQ + in-person clinical examination | AUD 6,562 |
| Portfolio + MCQ + online clinical examination | AUD 6,962 |
| Portfolio + MCQ + AMC WBA fee | AUD 4,632, plus provider charges |
These calculations assume one qualification and one attempt at each examination. The WBA subtotal excludes the provider’s program charges, so it should not be interpreted as the complete price of that route.
MyIntealth and EPIC costs
| Service | Fee in USD |
|---|---|
| MyIntealth account and identity confirmation | 110 |
| EPIC portfolio establishment | 35 |
| Verification of each credential | 110 |
| First report for each newly submitted credential | Free |
For a new applicant verifying one credential, these items normally total USD 255. Additional credentials, university verification charges, translations, courier services or further reports can change the amount. Previously verified credentials have separate rules.
Other expenses to include
Budget separately for Ahpra application and registration, English testing, criminal-history checks, certification, translations, PESCI where applicable, preparation materials, repeat exams, visa costs, flights, accommodation and relocation.
Ahpra fees vary by registration type. Check the live Medical Board fee schedule rather than using a single “Australian doctor licence fee” for every applicant. The AMC subtotals above are not complete migration or registration packages. INR equivalents will also vary with exchange rates and bank charges.
What Is PESCI?
PESCI means Pre-employment Structured Clinical Interview. It assesses suitability for a specific general practice position and its proposed scope and supervision.
A doctor applying to work in general practice may need PESCI even after passing the AMC Clinical Examination. PESCI does not replace the AMC clinical assessment or confer general registration. Check experience eligibility and the Board’s recommended application sequence before arranging one.
General Registration Versus Specialist GP Recognition
Australian general registration and specialist registration in general practice are separate. General registration does not automatically grant fellowship or specialist GP status.
Doctors planning a long-term GP career should investigate the applicable training or recognition options through the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners—RACGP or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine—ACRRM. Eligibility depends on qualifications, training and experience, rather than the overseas job title alone.
Medicare, Location Restrictions and Visa Planning
Medical registration does not automatically provide unrestricted Medicare billing eligibility. Overseas-trained doctors commonly have section 19AB restrictions affecting access to Medicare benefits. For GP work, this generally involves an eligible Distribution Priority Area, subject to exemptions and other rules. The restriction is commonly described as the ten-year moratorium.
Check the proposed job, registration category, Medicare eligibility and visa/work rights together before accepting a position. These are separate approvals.
How Long Does the Process Take?
There is no reliable single completion time for every applicant. Progress depends on institutional verification, exam preparation and results, examination availability, job selection, registration processing and access to an approved clinical or WBA position.
The supervised-practice requirement itself is generally at least 47 weeks full-time equivalent. Preparation, assessment and job-search time must also be allowed for. Treat promises of a guaranteed licence or guaranteed job within a few months cautiously.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I begin AMC preparation with only two years of GP experience?
Yes, experience at that level does not itself prevent starting the Standard Pathway. Qualification eligibility must still be confirmed. The three-year GP experience requirement discussed above applies to a particular limited-registration route.
Is AMC MCQ alone enough to practise in Australia?
No. It may support an application for a suitable position and limited registration, but employment and Board approval are still required. You must complete the remaining pathway requirements to obtain general registration.
Can I replace the clinical examination with WBA?
Yes, if admitted to an AMC-accredited program and you meet its employment, registration and other entry requirements. Availability is limited to participating providers and suitable positions.
Does my Indian internship replace the Australian supervised-practice requirement?
Do not assume so. Overseas internship evidence and the approved Australian supervised practice required for general registration are assessed separately.
Does passing AMC guarantee a job or permanent residency?
No. Employers select candidates, the Medical Board decides registration, and immigration authorities decide visa applications. Plan each stage separately.
Can I work immediately as an independent specialist GP after AMC?
An AMC certificate alone does not confer specialist GP recognition. Registration conditions, specialist status and Medicare eligibility must be considered separately.
