UAE Warns Against Unregulated Weight-Loss Injections

Action Taken Against 71 Establishments; 14 Influencers Referred to Authorities

Dubai: Health experts in the UAE have issued a strong warning against using peptide injections for weight loss without proper medical examination or professional supervision, particularly when such products are promoted by social media influencers.

The warning follows action by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) against 71 establishments accused of illegally selling peptide products. Fourteen social media influencers connected with the promotion of these products were also referred to the relevant authorities for further action.

Many people are purchasing peptide products through social media platforms or based on recommendations from friends, hoping to achieve rapid weight loss, increased energy, improved muscle growth or a younger appearance.

However, doctors have cautioned that several products advertised as “natural” have not undergone adequate clinical testing. Injecting such substances without confirming whether they are medically suitable for an individual can result in serious health risks.

Experts said many users take these injections without undergoing essential tests, including liver-function, blood-glucose and hormone assessments. Possible side effects include digestive problems, unexpected hormonal changes and fluctuations in blood pressure.

The use of poor-quality, counterfeit or incorrectly dosed products can also lead to severe health complications.

Psychologists noted that the desire for quick physical changes and the fear of ageing often drive people towards such shortcuts. They warned that influencers may appear friendly and trustworthy on social media, encouraging followers to accept their claims without questioning the possible risks.

Health professionals also stressed that products obtained from online sources other than licensed pharmacies cannot be guaranteed to be genuine, safe or properly stored.

The public has therefore been advised to avoid peptide injections and similar treatments without a doctor’s prescription, proper medical evaluation and supervision from a qualified healthcare professional.
