UAE Bans Trans Fats Completely; Strict Action Against Violators

Abu Dhabi, UAE:
The United Arab Emirates has announced a complete ban on harmful trans fats in food products, as part of its National Healthy Nutrition Strategy 2031. Authorities confirmed that strict measures will be taken against companies that violate the new regulation.

Trans fats, commonly found in foods such as biscuits, cakes, French fries, and popcorn, have been identified as a major health risk. These fats are typically produced by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils, converting them into solid forms known as hydrogenated oils. Food manufacturers often use these oils to enhance taste, extend shelf life, and reduce production costs.

However, health officials warn that these benefits come at a serious cost. According to the World Health Organization, trans fats are responsible for approximately 300,000 deaths annually worldwide.

Medical experts state that trans fats:

  • Increase bad cholesterol (LDL)
  • Decrease good cholesterol (HDL)
  • Raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes

Recognizing these dangers, the UAE government has implemented a strict nationwide ban.

High-Risk Food Products

Trans fats are commonly found in:

  • Packaged biscuits and cakes
  • Fried snacks and chips
  • Packaged popcorn
  • Frozen pastries

Authorities have advised consumers to carefully check product labels while shopping. Even if a product claims to be “trans fat-free,” it should be avoided if the ingredient list includes “Partially Hydrogenated Oil.”

Strict Enforcement Measures

Officials have confirmed that:

  • Products violating the regulation will be removed from the market
  • Companies will face heavy fines
  • Regular inspections will be intensified after the grace period given to manufacturers

Healthier Alternatives Recommended

Manufacturers are encouraged to replace trans fats with healthier options such as:

  • Sunflower oil
  • Corn oil
  • Other safer edible oils

The UAE’s decision marks a significant step toward improving public health and reducing lifestyle-related diseases across the country.
