Home Department Attestation

State Home Department (SHD) is a state level organization in which an individual gets to verify their personal documents. SHD stamp has to do to prove your documents authenticity. It is done by officials at the state council. Birth Certificate and Marriage certificate attestation and all other personal document verification are carried out under the privilege of the SHD. In the state of Maharashtra, SHD is also called as Mantralaya attestation.

SHD attestation:

When visiting a foreign country to prove the authenticity of your documents one needs to get their documents attested by the government authorities like the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Embassy.

You can’t get MEA and Embassy directly on your personal documents, you have to get state department stamp first.

The stamp on the document from the SHD proves the credibility and authenticity of the document before it is attested by the higher authorities.

Process for Home Department Attestation

It requires verification from other levels The attestation is needed to be done from the same state government where the documents have been issued. E.g. If your documents are issued from Maharashtra state, you need Maharashtra SHD stamp. There is an alternative process though, called as SDM Attestation. The steps involved are mentioned below:

  • Notary:
    The very first part of the authentication process is the attestation by notary. As proof, the document is provided with a stamp and a signature from the notary officials.
  • Home Department:
    The state government legalizes documents as well and the SHD is a part of the same. It is exclusive to certifying personal documents only.
