New Laboratory in Dubai to Detect Foodborne Viruses

Dubai Municipality has launched an advanced laboratory equipped with modern genomic technology to rapidly detect viruses transmitted through food. The new Virogenetics Laboratory, established under the Dubai Central Laboratory, has officially started operations.

This is the first laboratory of its kind in the UAE. The initiative is part of Dubai Municipality’s efforts to strengthen food safety standards and protect public health.

The laboratory can test up to 60 samples per day, and in emergency situations, its capacity can be increased to 100 samples per day.

One of the major features of the new lab is its ability to deliver accurate test results within a short time. This will help authorities speed up food testing and take important decisions quickly when needed.

The lab uses Digital PCR technology, one of the most advanced molecular analysis methods in the world. This technology can accurately detect the presence of viruses such as Norovirus, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis E.

Even very small amounts of viruses can be identified in food items such as dairy products, seafood, juices, and vegetables using this system. All tests are carried out in accordance with ISO standards.

Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of Dubai Central Laboratory, said the new lab has been established with the aim of making Dubai a global leader in food safety. She added that this is part of Dubai Municipality’s wider plan to develop specialized laboratories using advanced technologies.

The laboratory will also help collect genetic information about viruses and support the creation of a national database. For this purpose, the lab will cooperate with universities and research centers.
