Welcome to NursingManthra, your trusted guide for nursing licensure processes and international nursing career support!
In this blog, I’m going to walk you through how to apply for your Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State and the NCLEX-RN application process, especially if you’re a foreign-educated nurse. Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking to switch states, this guide will simplify your path to getting licensed in New York State Board of Nursing (NYS BON).
🌆 Why Choose New York for Your Nursing License?
New York City is the most densely populated major city in the United States — with a high demand for skilled nurses and competitive salaries. Unlike other U.S. states, New York’s licensing process is managed by NYSED (New York State Education Department), not the typical Board of Nursing (BON).
✅ Advantages of New York SBON Application
- ⏱️ Processing Time: 3 to 6 months (after all documents are received by NYSED)
- 🗓️ Transparency: Application processing dates are updated regularly on the official NYSED website.
- 🧑⚕️ No Experience Required: You can apply for licensure without prior nursing experience.
- ❌ No Fingerprint Card Needed: Unlike Illinois or other state BONs, NYSED doesn’t require fingerprint submission.
- 📆 Long Validity: Once you apply, you have 5 years to take the NCLEX — your application remains valid until you pass.
- 💲 Budget-Friendly: One of the cheapest licensure routes among U.S. states.
- License Renewal every 3 years only.
⚠️ Disadvantages of New York SBON
- 📚 Two Mandatory Courses Required:
- Child Abuse Identification
- Infection Control Training
- 💵 Additional Fees: These courses are not free.
Don’t worry — NursingManthra is here to help! We provide complete guidance on where to take these courses online and how to complete them quickly and affordably.

“Fraud Warning for Nursing Schools”
This is an important warning from NYSED that is missing in your blog.
Important Warning About Nursing Schools:
Applicants should ensure that the nursing program they attend is approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
Graduating from an unapproved program may make you ineligible for RN licensure in New York.
Before enrolling in a nursing program in New York, verify that the program is registered by NYSED as licensure-qualifying for RN.
Education Requirements for RN Licensure:
Applicants must graduate from one of the following:
1️⃣ A nursing education program registered by NYSED
OR
2️⃣ A nursing program located in another U.S. state or territory approved by its licensing authority
OR
3️⃣ A nursing program outside the United States, which must:
- be at least two academic years
- be recognized by the government or licensing authority of that country
- prepare graduates for RN practice
8️⃣ Expand Your Coursework Requirement Section:
Your blog mentions these but needs more details.
Child Abuse Reporting Course:
Applicants must complete NYSED-approved child abuse identification and reporting training.
If you graduated from a NYSED-approved nursing program after September 1, 1990, the course is already included in your education.
Otherwise, you must complete the course through an approved provider.
Some applicants may qualify for an exemption if they will not work with:
- children under 18
- residents of nursing homes or care facilities
Infection Control Course:
All nurses practicing in New York must complete infection control training every 4 years.
If you graduated from a NYSED-approved nursing program within the past 4 years, the course requirement is already satisfied.
Otherwise, you must complete an approved infection control course.
Applicants may request an exemption if they have equivalent training or their nursing practice does not require it.

Who Must Take the NCLEX-RN:
Your blog talks about NCLEX but does not clearly explain who is exempt.
Add this paragraph.
NCLEX-RN Examination Requirement:
In most cases, applicants must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to meet the examination requirement for RN licensure in New York.
The NCLEX-RN is developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and administered by Pearson VUE.
The exam tests the knowledge and clinical skills required for safe and effective entry-level nursing practice.
However, applicants who were previously licensed as an RN in:
- another U.S. state
- a U.S. territory
- Canada
and who passed either:
- State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE)
- NCLEX-RN
have already met the examination requirement for New York RN licensure.
All other applicants must take and pass the NCLEX-RN examination.
How to Register for the NCLEX-RN:
Your blog briefly explains this, but it should be clearer.
How to Register for the NCLEX-RN Exam:
To take the NCLEX-RN examination, applicants must complete two steps:
Step 1 — Apply for RN licensure with NYSED:
Submit the Application for Licensure (Form 1) and pay the $143 application fee to the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
Step 2 — Register with Pearson VUE:
Register for the NCLEX-RN through Pearson VUE:
After NYSED reviews your application, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email from Pearson VUE.
You can then schedule the exam at an approved NCLEX testing center worldwide.
Step 6 — License Issuance:
Once all documents are verified and exam passed:
NYSED issues your RN license.
Important Update You Should Add:
New York:
❌ Not a Nurse Licensure Compact state
✔ Requires separate NY license

- Every 3 years.

- Complete the mandatory Child Abuse & Infection Control course
