Job Description
An ophthalmologist with refractive experience specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of vision problems, particularly those requiring refractive surgery like LASIK or PRK, Femto lasik and SMILE . They are responsible for performing comprehensive eye exams, including evaluating refractive errors, prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses, and performing surgical procedures to correct vision. Additionally, they advise patients on eye health and vision correction option
Job Requirements
- Medical Degree:
- A recognized medical degree (MD
- MBBS
- or equivalent) is the foundational requirement.
- Ophthalmology Residency:
- Completion of a four-year ophthalmology residency program is crucial. This provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of eye diseases and surgical procedures.
- Fellowship Training (Optional
- but often preferred):
- Many ophthalmologists pursuing refractive surgery choose to complete a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery. This provides specialized training in advanced refractive techniques
- corneal transplants
- and managing complex cases.
- Specific Skills and Experience:
- Surgical Expertise:
- Proficiency in various refractive surgical procedures like LASIK
- PRK
- ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
- and other vision correction techniques is essential.
- Patient Assessment and Management:
- The ability to accurately assess patients
- determine candidacy for refractive surgery
- and manage postoperative care is vital.
- Knowledge of Refractive Errors:
- A thorough understanding of myopia
- hyperopia
- astigmatism
- and presbyopia is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Experience with Diagnostic Equipment:
- Familiarity with advanced diagnostic tools used in refractive surgery
- such as corneal topographers
- aberrometers
- and optical coherence tomography (OCT)

- Other Considerations:
- Continuing Medical Education (CME):
